Avatar Holds Commanding Lead, Basking in Golden Globes Glow

AVATAR held onto its lead at the box office for the fifth consecutive week over the weekend, Jan. 15-17, raking in $42.8 million for Fox.

THE BOOK OF ELI came in the #2 spot for its opening weekending, bringing in nearly $32.8 million for Warner Bros. THE LOVELY BONES grabbed the #3 spot with $17 million for Paramount.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL earned nearly $11.7 million and the #4 spot for Fox.

SHERLOCK HOLMES was bumped down to #5 with nearly $9.9 million for Warner Bros. THE SPY NEXT DOOR grabbed the #6 spot with $9.6 million for Lionsgate. Universal's IT'S COMPLICATED brought in nearly $7.7 million and the #7 spot. LEAP YEAR from Universal earned $5.8 million and the #8 spot.

THE BLIND SIDE from Warner Bros. earned nearly $5.6 million and the #9 spot over its ninth week in theaters. UP IN THE AIR from Paramount earned nearly $5.5 million, rounding out the top ten.
