Apes Takes Top Banana at U.S. Box Office Again

For the second week in a row, Fox's RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES place at the top of the U.S. box office. For the weekend of August 12-14, 2011, the prequel earned an additional $27.8 million. With vfx from Weta Digital, Halon Ent. and Pixel Liberation Front, the visual effects spectacle has amassed $105.2 million to date.

Buena Visa's civil rights era drama, THE HELP, debuted in second with an impressive $26 million.

New Line's FINAL DESINATION 5 killed teens to the tune of $18 million in a third place premiere. Halon Ent., Prime Focus Film and Soho VFX provided the visual effects.

Sony's THE SMURFS sunk to fourth with $13.7 million. With vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), Framestore, Lola Visual Effects, Tippett Studio, Drac Studios, Illusion Industries, The Base Studio and The Third Floor, the family hit has a cume of $101.8 million.

Sony's 30 MINUTES OR LESS debuted in fifth, stealing $13.3 million.

Universal's COWBOYS & ALIENS roped another $7.81 million in sixth. With vfx from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Creature Effects, Halon Ent., Kerner Optical, Legacy Effects, Lidar Guys, Lightwave International and Shade VFX, the genre mash-up has brought in $81.7 million.

Arriving in seventh place, Warner Bros.' HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 blasted in an additional $7.25 million. With vfx from Double Negative, Framestore, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Baseblack, Cinesite, Gener8 3D, Gradient Effects, Lola Visual Effects, Mova, Peanut FX, Prime Focus Film, Rising Sun Pictures, The Base Studio, Tippett Studio, Union Visual Effects, The Visual Effects Company and i.e. Effects, the final POTTER film has a cume of $357.3 million.

Paramount and Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER saved $7.21 million in eighth, lifting its cume to $157 million. Double Negative, 4DMax, Evil Eye Pictures, FB-FX, Framestore, Fuel VFX, Gradient Effects, Hydraulx, Lola Visual Effects, Luma Pictures, Matte World Digital, Peanut FX, The Senate Visual Effects, Stereo D, The Base Studio, The Third Floor and Whiskytree provided the visual effects.

Warner Bros.' CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. romanced another $7.05 million. With vfx from Gravity, the romcom has box office receipts totaling $55.5 million.

Closing out the top ten, THE CHANGE-UP collected an additional $6.31 million. The raunchy comedy has a cume of $25.8 million.
