Scoring the fourth best opening ever for any Universal title, Lorax is the best showing for any animated film since summer 2010 when Toy Story 3 debuted to $110.3 million and Shrek Forever After opened to $70.8 million.
Warner Bros. found footage comedy Project X came in second this weekend with an estimated $20.78 million, the third straight found footage movie to debut over $20 million, following The Devil Inside and Chronicle.
Relativity Media's Navy SEALs action picture Act of Valor came in at number three with $13.7 million for a total of $45.2 million.
Safe House held steady in fourth place, earning $7.2 million, with a total of $108.2 million.
Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds, from Lionsgate, came in fifth this weekend, bringing in $7 million for a total of $25.7 million.
At sixth place, the 3D feature Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, from New Line and Warner Bros., earned $6.9 million for a total of $85.6 million.
Screen Gems’ The Vow, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, moved down to seventh place with $6.1 million for a total of $111.7 million.
Fox’s This Means War came in eighth place, earning $5.6 million for a total of $41.5 million.
Sony’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance held ninth place, with an estimated $4.7 million in its third weekend in theaters, with a total of $44.9 million.
Rounding out the list at tenth place, The Weinstein Company’s The Artist received an Oscar bump, grossing $3.9 million over the weekend for a total of $37.1 million.
