A crowded weekend at the North American box office saw Sony's CG animated feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 opening to $35 million, while the three other new offerings -- Ron Howard's Rush, Baggage Claim and Don Jon -- turned in mixed performances.

The $78 million sequel opens four years after the first Cloudy turned into a surprise hit for Sony Pictures Animation, which grossed $245.8 million worldwide.

Alcon Entertainment's holdover Prisoners came in second place for its sophomore weekend, grossing $11.3 million for a 10-day total of $39 million, and edging out Ron Howard’s Rush, the Formula One drama starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl.

In third place, Rush grossed $10.3 million as it expanded nationwide a limited release last weekend in New York and Los Angeles. Independently financed by Cross Creek Pictures and Exclusive Media for $45 million after tax rebates, Universal is distributing the film in the U.S., while Entertainment One is releasing Rush in Canada.

Fox Searchlight's comedy Baggage Claim, targeted toward African-Americans, grossed $9.3 million from in number four.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut Don Jon came in fifth, taking in $9 million. The film is distributed by Relativity Media, which acquired U.S. rights for $4 million in addition to committing to a reported $27 million marketing budget, was financed and produced by Voltage Pictures for $5 million to $6 million.

Opening exclusively in select IMAX theaters is Metallica: Through the Never, a thriller-concert hybrid from Bob Berney's Picturehouse label. Placing at number 12, the movie grossed $1.7 million.

Around-the-World Roundup

It was a very quiet weekend at the overseas box office, with only one Hollywood production earning over $10 million. That movie was Runner Runner, which opened to $11.2 million from 38 foreign markets a week ahead of its U.S. debut.

The Justin Timberlake-Ben Affleck gambling thriller took first place in Russia with $3 million. It earned $1.2 million in France and the U.K., which was less impressive. Finally, it opened below $1 million in Australia and South Korea.

Despicable Me 2 passed $500 million overseas this weekend. It's the eighth animated movie ever to pass that milestone, and its worldwide total of $864 million ranks seventh all-time among animated fare. It still has Italy and a few smaller markets on the way in the next two weeks, and should wind up with over $880 million before the end of its run.
