Bourne Reigns Supreme at Box Office

Universal's spy sequel, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY (with vfx by ILM), ruled the box office for the weekend ended July 25, 2004, capturing $52.5M. That was far better than I, ROBOT's second place finish of $21.7M (with vfx by Digital Domain and Patrick Tatopoulos Design). In two weeks, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller from Fox has gathered $95.1M. Debuting in third place, Warner Bros.' CATWOMAN (with vfx by ESC and Tippett Studio) turned in a disappointing $16.7M. Sony's SPIDER-MAN 2 (with vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks and Radium Inc.) slipped to fourth with $15M and pretty staggering cume of $328.4M. Warner Bros.' A CINDERELLA STORY came in fifth with $7.8M and a total of $29.6M. DreamWork's ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY (with vfx by E=mc2) occupied sixth with $6.9M and $71M. Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 9/11 dipped to seventh with $4.7M, but not before accumulating a historic $103.1M for Lions Gate. New Line's weepie, THE NOTEBOOK, took in $4.2M for an eighth place finish and $62.3M to date. At number nine was KING ARTHUR, which took in $3M for a lackluster cume of $45.1M. Cinesite (Europe) and Neil Corbould Special Effects Ltd. did vfx on the Buena Vista release. Placing 10th was DreamWorks' SHREK 2, the number one film of the summer and top grossing animated feature of all time, which added $2.3M to its phenomenal gross of $429.4M.
