After the publication of our closer look on Animation Serving Music (AWN Spotlight 4/27/00), animation historian Giannalberto Bendazzi sent us the following information: "As the connection between music and images is a hot spot in the AWN Spotlight, I feel forced to let all the English reading people know that in 1995 a book by the title of 'Coloriture' was edited by myself with colleagues Manuele Cecconello and Guido Michelone. It was the first - and I think still the only - book dealing with the soundtrack in animation cinema. Unfortunately, 'Coloriture' never found an English publisher, and still stays secluded in its language, Italian, which is not international. It contains essays from 25 different scholars on: theory; animation and different kinds of music; film-makers and music-makers for animation (from Gioachino Rossini to Carl W. Stalling, Scott Bradley, Raymond Scott and Normand Roger); a wonderful work by Ermanno Comuzio about the 1940's "Fantasia;" a transcription, shot by shot and note by note, of Alexandre Alexeieff's "Night on a Bald Mountain" (1933) by Francesca Camera; and many more. It is a scholarly book - neither funny, nor anecdotal, nor popular, nor thin. But it received very good reviews, and was made by professionals. As editors, we spent a lot of energy and passion on it.
