Ben Stiller is in discussions to take the lead of 20th Century Fox's long-gestating THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, reports Deadline.com. Steve Conrad (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS) penned the most recent take on the script.
Based on the 1947 Danny Kaye comedy and James Thurber's 1939 New Yorker short story, the plot centers on a daydreamer who casts himself as a hero inspired by the mundane things around him.
The actors who have circled the lead over the years include Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen. Even top directors, like Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Gore Verbinski, flirted with the project.
Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and John Goldwyn are the producers and Stiller's Red Hour Films would be involved as well.
Fox wants to get started filming in late fall.
