As a handyman at the hotel his father used to own, Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) spends his days changing light bulbs and competing with the hotel's smarmy manager (Guy Pearce) for the attention of the new owner's beautiful, hard-partying daughter, Violet (Theresa Palmer). When his sister Wendy (Courteney Cox) asks Skeeter to babysit her kids for a week while she's out of town, Skeeter entertains his niece and nephew with elaborate, original bedtime stories that transport them to exotic locales, including ancient Greece, the Wild West and outer space. When he tries to help his family by telling one outlandish tale after another, it's the kids' unexpected contributions that turn all of their lives upside down. Full of imaginative special effects and good-natured hilarity, BEDTIME STORIES is a winning combination of comedy and adventure.

BEDTIME STORIES features vfx from Hydraulx, Cinesite Europe, Fuel VFX, Tippett Studio, Lola VFX with work from Whiskytree, Rotofactory and Look Effects.

Keeping it all believable and of a single piece was the task handed to Visual Effects Supervisor John Andrew Berton Jr., who was intrigued by the challenge of creating effects that contributed to the storytelling in a realistic way while fitting into the style of comedy moviegoers expect from Sandler.

"That to me was a really interesting mix to try to find, to get the effects into the story so that it didn't look like sort of cheesy comedy effects, but was really high quality visual effects work in service of a really family oriented story," he says.

Berton oversaw eight visual effects facilities working on around 500 shots for the film. And the sequences were as different and challenging as the stories within the movie, which ranged from a BEN-HUR-style chariot race to a medieval knights in shining armor scenario to a zero gravity showdown in outer space.

Each section needed to have its own kind of spectacle to it, Berton says, while still looking photorealistic instead of too fantastic.

"We wanted it to look like a real place, a real story with real people in it, but yet still have this feeling of these sort of grand landscapes and grand storyscapes, if you will," Berton adds. "So each one of those had to be handled a little bit differently, but still had to have a tonality that went across the whole movie in terms of the way the visual effects work with the story."

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL on DVD and Blu-ray

Experience non-stop thrills, high-stakes action and mind-blowing special effects as mankind faces the fear of total annihilation when THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL arrives on Blu-ray and DVD April 7 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Ent. And for a limited time, both the BD and DVD versions of the film are packaged with a copy of the 1951 classic that influenced generations of sci-fi enthusiasts, authors and filmmakers.

A contemporary reinvention of the original, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is an intense and electrifying drama centering on an imminent global catastrophe and one outsider's determination to stop it. The action-packed thrill ride stars Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to exterminate the human race before the planet succumbs to impending disaster. When the government responds with hostile force, the fate of humanity lies with a young scientist, Jennifer Connelly who must embark on a high-stakes mission to convince the entity that mankind is worth saving, before it is too late.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Special Edition Blu-ray and DVD, both with Digital Copy, are three-disc sets that include the 1951 version of the film, which was widely acclaimed as one of the most thought-provoking science-fiction films of all time. Both the BD and DVD are highlighted by out-of-this-world bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, picture-in-picture commentary, a "Build Your Own Gort" feature (BD-exclusive) and more. A two-disc version of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is also available on DVD, featuring both 2008 and 1951 versions of the film.

When Overall Visual Effects Supervisor Jeff Okun started work on the project, the initial vfx shot count estimation was 750. It then went down to 480 shots by the time the team was ready to shoot -- a result of resource streamlining and various in-camera approaches agreed upon. In post-production, the final shot count rose to 507, as all parties agreed that a few more tweaks were needed to help tell the story with more impact. Surprisingly for a project of this complexity, there were very few "fix-it-in-post" additional shots.

The team had the opportunity to benefit from a generous six-month preparation time. "The film looks as good as it does because we had that time to prep, explore and test in pre-production, and were able to stick with our plan during production," Okun insists. "Post lasted about five months -- including element shoots, shooting new sequences (which Jim Rygiel, a friend of mine, supervised while I was in New Zealand) and the like.

"We used 10 vendors on this show. Weta was our primary vendor, accomplishing 221 shots of stunning reality and beauty, and incredibly adhering to the budget and the schedule. Cinesite ended up with 42 really dynamic shots of the Drone attack, the interrogation sequence, as well as the opening shot and a few snow matte paintings. Flash Film Works did 95 shots featuring some great CG helicopters, driving comps, matte paintings and rain additions. CosFX created 74 shots mostly dealing with rising spheres, still life in New York City and many composites. Hydraulx did 13 shots of the amazing looking attack on the missile silo, while Hammerhead did three very difficult shots dealing with a helicopter landing, and a still life interior and the Trooper healing shot. Screaming Monkey created 3D birds for the "Super Sphere" shot that Weta did. We also used Digital Dimension and Digital Domain, as well as nTropic, for several matte paintings, life coming to a stop and the like."

"Building a feature animation arm is a ton of work," Lipman admits." It's very different from a visual effects division in the number of shots and how you track assets and deal with managing a show. First time pipes are really tough but we got there in the end. And visually the show is like nothing you've ever seen. It was challenging to do a kid's storybook come to life: it's very painterly and unbelievably detailed and the directors [Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen] allowed us to go really dark. There are a lot of blacks and things falling off into nothing. It's stunningly beautiful."
