Monday, December 2, 2002 is the deadline for both the official screen credits forms and music award submission forms to be received by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Music is traditionally a strong field for animated films. "If I Didn't Have You" from MONSTERS, INC. won Best Original Song in 2001 and many animated features including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, LION KING and POCAHONTAS have won for both Original Song and Original Score. Cinanima Announces Winners!

Since 1977, Cinanima has been promoting the international art of animation in Espinho, a city located on the Northern coast of Portugal. The festival capped off a week of screenings and seminars with its awards presentation on November 10, 2002. Zoia Trofimova's LE TROP PETIT PRINCE took home the Grand Prize and Dave Unwin's WAR GAME took home the Alves Costa Journalists Prize. Portuguese filmmaker Jose Miguel Ribeiro won the FNAC Prize for best Portuguese script and also won the Best Portuguese Cartoon prize for his film AS COISAS LA DE CASA.

HAFF Selects Barcode And Dog For Grand Prix

The 9th edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) concluded on November 17, 2002 and festival organizers announced that attendance for the five-day festival rose to 11,500 admissions, up 10% from the 2000 edition of the festival.

The 19th Annual Chicago International Children's Film Festival (CICFF) handed out its awards for this year’s festival on Sunday, November 3, 2002. Awards were presented by two juries, the Adult Jury, whose members include media professionals from the film and video, animation, television, radio and print industries, and the Children’s Jury, comprised of children ages 7-13.

I Castelli Awards Grand Prize To Flux

Some festival favorites took home awards at this year's I Castelli Animati Festival, in Genzano di Roma, Italy. Concluding on October 27, 2002, the festival honored Christopher Hinton's FLUX with the International Grand Prize, while Robert Bradbrook's HOME ROAD MOVIES picked up the award for Best European Film. Special Jury Prizes were awarded to STROJENIE INSTRUMENTOW (TUNING INSTRUMENTS) by Jerzy Kucia and THE INVASION by Phil Mulloy.

BAFTA Children’s Film And Television Nominations Announced

Hobbits, wizards, monsters and an adventurous mouse will all be hoping to walk away with a BAFTA at this year’s British Academy Children’s Film and Television Awards, presented in association with the LEGO Company. LORD OF THE RINGS: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE, MONSTERS, INC. and STUART LITTLE 2 have all been nominated in the Feature Film category, with the winner to be announced on November 24, 2002 in a ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton. The awards ceremony, now in its seventh year, honors the best in children’s TV and film.

Flux Flies With Golden Dove At Leipzig Awards

It's another award for Canadian Christopher Hinton, as the Leipzig DOK Festival honored his animated short FLUX with the Golden Dove for Animated Films. The award was accompanied by € 3,000. Other honorees in the Animated Films category were Silver Dove recipients PLAIN PLEASURES by Sarah Cox (UK) and BARCODE by Adriaan Lokman (Netherlands). The jury also gave Honorary Mention to the films ARIA by Piotr Sapegin (Norway) and BOOKASHKIS by Mikhail Aldashin (Russia), which also took home the Audience Award. Leipzig DOK is an annual festival honoring documentary and animated films.

On October 20, the LA International Short Film Festival honored Sony Pictures Imageworks CG short THE CHUBBCHUBBS as Best Animated Short Film. The comedy, directed by Eric Armstrong (animation supervisor for STUART LITTLE 2 and HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE), features an alien hero named Meeper who valiantly tries to warn the patrons of the Ale-E-Inn of impending intergalactic danger. THE CHUBBCHUBBS is the first digitally animated short film produced by Imageworks, and it also recently took Best Short Film honors at Digital Media World's LEAF Awards.

The LEAF Awards were presented on October 9th during the Digital Media World Conference, October 9-11, 2002. The LEAF Awards showcases and promotes the best new work, skills and services of companies and individuals involved in creative development of visual effects and animation. The nominees were comprised of some of the top visual effects and animation houses today, such as Sony Pictures Imageworks, ILM, The Mill, Passion Pictures, Framestore CFC and many others. Sony Pictures Imageworks took best short film for The ChubbChubbs, the company’s first CGI short.

In a truly international showing, the jury of the 2002 edition of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) chose five films from five different countries as the top prize winners in the Independent Short Films Competition. The festival concluded on October 6, 2002 with a gala awards presentation and Robert Bradbrook's HOME ROAD MOVIES (UK) scored the Grand Prize for Best Independent Short Film or Video. The film, which recently won the coveted 2002 Cartoon d'Or, is a true account of a shy father and his wish to bring his family closer together by taking them on automobile outings.

Home Road Movies Wins 2002 Cartoon d'Or

The 2002 Cartoon d’Or has been awarded to Robert Bradbrook for his short film HOME ROAD MOVIES. Also the winner of the Spcial Jury Prize at Annecy 2002, HOME ROAD MOVIES is the real-life story of a shy and awkward father who uses road trips in the family car to help him be a better parent. The film is a mix of 3D animation and live-action. The Cartoon d'Or winner receives 25,000 Euro from MEDIA as a pre-production aid to begin a more ambitious project like a feature film or a TV special. The prize was awarded on September 21, 2002, the closing night of the 13th Cartoon Forum.

Jeffrey Katzenberg To Receive Hollywood Animation Award

DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg will be the first recipient of the newly established "Tex Avery Animation Award" at the 2002 Hollywood Film Festival, to be held in October in Hollywood, California. The award is named for legendary animator Tex Avery, who began his animation career in 1932 at Walter Lantz and went on to work at Warner Bros., MGM and Hanna Barbera. The award will be presented annually to honor an individual or group who have nurtured and advanced the art form of animation through outstanding contributions in the creative and/or technical arenas.

Winners of the 54th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards were announced at the Shrine Auditorium on September 14, 2002. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Darrell Hammond hosted the evening, which honors television's top talent behind the camera. In the animation-related categories, FUTURAMA, which recently found a new home on Cartoon Network, picked up its first Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program Less Than One Hour, beating out fellow Fox nominees THE SIMPSONS and KING OF THE HILL, as well as Comedy Central's SOUTH PARK and Nickelodeon's AS TOLD BY GINGER.

Dudok De Wit Takes Home Hiroshima Grand Prize

Unbound Studios Wins Gold BDA For Sesame Street Music Website

Animation and interactive entertainment company Unbound Studios
recently took home the gold. The Gold Broadcast Design Award for
Educational Websites, that is. Unbound won for Sesame Street's MUSIC
ZONE Website, which combines animation, interactivity and structured
learning of music for a pre-school audience. Using the charm and
humor of the Muppets, Unbound designed and worked closely with
educators to fashion an engaging site that combined Macromedia's
Flash and Director programs with Beatnik audio to create operas and
