The 11th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film was celebrated March 22-27, 2002. The biannual festival presented a wide-ranging program. 425 films were shown over six days and in four competitions. Prizes amounting to 54,500 Euro were handed out. In the International Competition, the Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg (7,500 Euro) went to STROJENIE INSTRUMENTÓW (TUNING INSTRUMENTS) by Jerzy Kucia, while the Prize of the City of Stuttgart, also 7,500 Euro, went to Phil Mulloy's THE INVASION. The International Sponsorship Prize for Animated Film, awarded to the best graduation film of an international film school, university or art school (15,000 Euro), was won by Russian filmmaker Dmitri Geller's PRIVET IS KISLOVODSKA (HELLO FROM KISLOVODSK). The prize money is to be used to finance the production of a new animated film to be premiered at the next festival in March 2004. Michael Dudok De Wit picked up yet another prize for his Oscar-winning short FATHER AND DAUGHTER. The film won first prize and 6,000 Euro in the Audience Prize category. Second prize and 4,000 Euro was awarded to KÖVEK (STONES) by Ferenc Cakó, while third prize and 2,000 Euro was given to Germany's Johannes Weiland for his film HESSI JAMES.
The International student and graduate prize for the best student film (2,500 Euro) went to director Semi Ryu's HUNGBOGA. Finally, Bill Plympton won the Audience Prize for the best animated feature film (5,000 Euro) for his latest film MUTANT ALIENS.
