TURKEY -- Honoring TTNET & the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival
Turkey's enduring culture is a critical bridge between Europe and the Middle East, and as such, has enormous impact and influence today. As one of the world's leading storytelling cultures, its television and filmmaking have long had influence far beyond its borders. Turkish Telecom's TTNET was the first web and television operator to embrace short films in Southern Europe or the Middle East. For the first time ever, regional filmmakers have a platform to credibly release their work and to be seen by audiences not only in Turkey, but across Europe. Turkey's leading film event each year, the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, has also greatly expanded its support for short films and short filmmaking. Together, these private efforts to expand and provide for a greater base of filmmaking in Turkey through the broad-based support of emerging voices in film is having and will continue to have enormous impact throughout Europe and the Middle East. It is because of these unheralded efforts and their significant potential impact on the world of storytelling that the Awards Committee today awards "The International Award in Short Filmmaking" to Turkey, honoring TTNET and the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.
