France's film organization CNC has chosen Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's animated feature PERSEPOLIS to represent the country at the 2008 Oscars, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Based on Satrapi's popular autobiographical comicbook, the story follows a spunky and outspoken young girl growing up in Iran during Islamic Revolution. The voice cast includes Simon Abkarian, Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni. 2.4.7 films produced the movie.

Sony Pictures Classics plans to release a redubbed version of the Cannes jury prize-winner later this year. The English-language version will feature the voices of Gena Rowlands, Sean Penn, Iggy Pop and Deneuve.

PERSEPOLIS was a box office hit in its home country, selling 1.12 million tickets. In June, upon protests from the Iranian government, the film was pulled from the lineup at the Bangkok International Film Festival.
