Jerry Scott, co-creator of the ZITS and BABY BLUES comic strips, has won the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) 2001 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. The "Oscar of cartooning" was presented at a black tie gala during the 56th Annual Reuben Awards Weekend, held this year in Cancun, Mexico. The Reuben Award, given by the NCS each year for exemplary cartoon work created in the previous year, was designed by and named after the NCS' first president, Rube Goldberg. In addition, cartoonists in various professional divisions were also honored with special plaques for excellence. Artist Frank Cho won for his work on the comic book LIBERTY MEADOWS as well as in the book illustration division; Chris Reccardi and Lynne Naylor won the Television Animation award for SAMURAI JACK; and Pete Docter won the Feature Animation division for his work on MONSTERS, INC.



Comic strips have been adapted into animation since the art form's origins. This month Dr. Toon looks at some of today's leading contenders, including Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman's ZITS, to make the leap to motion.
