Dutch director Michael Dudok de Wit received the 11th Cartoon D’or for his short film FATHER AND DAUGHTER. The award was presented on September 22, 2001 at the closing night of Cartoon Forum. FATHER AND DAUGHTER has also been awarded the 2000 Academy Award for Best Animated Short and the Annecy Grand Prix this year. This is the second Cartoon D’or for Dudok de Wit, who was honored in 1995 for his film THE MONK AND THE FISH. Cartoon Forum, now in its 12th year, is the annual European animation co-financing event, organized by Cartoon with the support of MEDIA, a Program of the European Union and the Bayerische Staatskanzlei and in partnership with the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and the City of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Over 700 participants gathered in Bavaria from September 19 to September 22, 2001. There were seventy-nine TV special or series projects at the Forum that originated from twelve European countries, representing 500 hours of programming and a total budget of EUR 324M (approx. USD 299M). The diversity of the projects that were presented gave the event an especially dynamic atmosphere this year, and the quality of the concepts, designs and techniques (particularly in 3D animation) aroused much enthusiasm and declarations of support from the 263 attending broadcasters and investors. Forum organizers say that according to the professionals present, this Cartoon Forum has been the best since its creation. AWN will present a full report from the Forum in the next few weeks.
