LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA took home double honors at the Motion Picture Sound Editors' Golden Reel Awards, held Saturday night, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The World War II historical pic was honored for dialogue and automated dialogue replacement category, as well as for sound effects/foley.

APOCALYPTO won for music in a feature film, while DREAMGIRLS was honored for music editing in a musical feature film. PAN'S LABYRINTH was feted for the foreign film sound effects/foley.

Taking home the prize for direct-to-video was THE FOX AND THE HOUND II, while HELLGATE: LONDON CINEMATIC took the computer entertainment prize and DEEP SEA 3-D won in the special venue category.
The Verna Fields award for student filmmakers was given to TEMERARIO.

The MPSE's career achievement award was presented to Richard L. Anderson, who has edited such films as POLTERGEIST, STAR WARS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

Anderson highlighted the role of a sound editor to his peers before taking back his award to his seat. In accepting he said, "[Sound editors] not only create sounds of the future, we preserve the sounds of the past -- including sounds of those pesky dinosaurs I used to work with."

Clint Eastwood was given the MPSE's Film Maker Award. Echoing a previous recipient, Eastwood said, "Fifty percent of a motion picture is sound. Sound is subliminal. It's behind you, and it's underneath you."
