In London on Sunday night, April 11, The British Academy of Film and Televsion Arts (BAFTA) presented THE CANTERBURY TALES with their 1999 award for Best Short Animated Film. The film is a 27 mininute long adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer's classic poem about pilgrims telling tales while travelling to Canterbury. The film includes three of the travellers' tales, each one animated in a different style. The film was produced by Renat Zinnurov, Claire Jennings, and Les Mills. It was directed by Aida Zyablikova, Ashley Potter, Dave Antrobus, Mic Graves, Joanna Quinn, and Jonathan Myerson. Other nominees in the category included: 1001 NIGHTS, Yukio Sonoyama/Mike Smith; GOGWANA, Helen Nabarro/Deiniol Morris/Sion Jones/Michael Mort/Joe Turner; and HUMDRUM, Carla Shelley/Julie Lockhart/Peter Peake. Recent winners of the BAFTA award have included THE OLD LADY AND THE PIGEONS and STAGE FRIGHT.


The award for Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects went to SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, Stefen Fangmeier/Roger Guyett/Neil Corbould. Other nominees in the category, The Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects, were ANTZ, BABE: PIG IN THE CITY, and THE TRUMAN SHOW. The awards were televised on the BBC.
