Animaction Awards Teen-Produced PSAs
AnimAction, Inc. will be presenting their 12th Annual TEAM (Tobacco Education Awareness Message) Awards on April 10, 2002, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. at the Wadsworth Theatre located in Brentwood, California. AnimAction is a production company dedicated to utilizing the art of animation as a way to educate children about issues of global concern. The company teaches kids to produce animated Public Service Announcements as part of their educational program. AnimAction conducted a series of two-day animation workshops at over thirty Los Angeles-area middle schools, teaching kids to produce animated Public Service Announcements (PSAs) as part of the program. After researching all aspects of tobacco and learning how tobacco companies market their products globally, with the help of AnimAction the students produced 30-second animated PSAs addressing tobacco use prevention. Between ten and fourteen animated PSAs were produced per school and a panel of animation industry professionals selected the PSAs from each school that had the most original concept and best conveyed the anti-tobacco message. The 33 finalists will be screened at the awards celebration and Kids' WB! will honor the winning students by airing their PSA on the network. The anti-tobacco project has garnered support from major broadcasters and children entertainment companies including Kids' WB!, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Toon Disney, Fox Kids, Animation Magazine, KidScreen, Klasky Csupo, Inc, DreamWorks and EIDC, with added support from the Office on Smoking & Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
