Avatar Gets Within Striking Distance of All-Time Records

Following a sixth consecutive week at the top, AVATAR is within clear striking distance of breaking the all-time domestic and worldwide box office records. The film, which is now in second place behind TITANIC in both of the aforementioned all-time records, raked in nearly $35 million for Fox over the weekend, Jan. 22-24.

LEGION came in the #2 spot for its opening weekend, earning $17.5 million. THE BOOK OF ELI came in the #3 spot for second week, bringing in $15.7 million for Warner Bros. THE TOOTH FAIRY grabbed the #4 spot with $14 million for Fox.

THE LOVELY BONES got the #5 spot with $8.4 million for Paramount. SHERLOCK HOLMES was bumped down to #6 with nearly $96.6 million for Warner Bros.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL earned nearly $6.4 million and the #7 spot for Fox. EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES brought in $6 million and the #8 spot for CBS. IT'S COMPLICATED brought in $5.8 million and the #9 spot for Universal. THE SPY NEXT DOOR rounded out the top ten with $4.6 million for Lionsgate.
