Audiences Race to Witch Mountain

Disney's remake RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN easily won the weekend box office with $24.4 million in its debut. The Dwayne Johnson-led family actioner had vfx by Furious FX, Proof and RotoFactory.

Last week's winner, WATCHMEN, fell a sharp 67.7 percent for a number two finish with $17.8M and a two-week gross of $85.8M. The Warner Bros. film had vfx by CIS Hollywood, Drac Studios, Gentle Giant Studios, Intelligent Creatures, Lidar Services, Moving Picture Company, Proof, Quantum Creation FX, Rising Sun Pictures, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Svengali Visual Effects.

Horror opener THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (Universal, vfx by Rez-Illusion) made $14.1M and came in third.

TAKEN continues to perform, falling only 10 percent in its seventh week out from last week's third place finish for fourth place and another $6.6M for Fox. It has made $126.8M total. Coming in fifth place was Lionsgate's TYLER PERRY'S MADEA GOES TO JAIL with $5.1M and a four-week cume of $83.2M.

Sixth place went to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (Fox Searchlight) with $5.003M and an 18-week gross of $132.6M.

PAUL BLART: MALL COP, Sony's hit family comedy, came in seventh place with $3.1M and in nine weeks has made $137.8M. Rom-com HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (Warner Bros./New Line) placed eighth with $2.94M and in six weeks has earned $89.04M.

Focus Features' CORALINE (animation from Laika) made $2.7M in its sixth week out, good enough for ninth place. Its total cume stands at $69.2M.

Teen comedy MISS MARCH (Fox Searchlight) opened in tenth place with $2.4M.

In animated returns, WALTZ WITH BASHIR (Sony Pictures Classics) made $52,317 in 82 theaters and has a 12-week gross of $2.1M. Summit Ent.'s FLY ME TO THE MOON earned $52,068 and in 31 weeks in release has a cume of $13.2M.
