Geneon Ent. reported that DVD sales of APPLESEED have exceeded expectations with more than 85,000 units sold to date since the titles May 10 release, setting a new standard for anime titles released in North America, and shaping up to be one of the top anime releases of 2005.
Major retailers have sold the majority of their initial orders within the first two weeks, with reorders already in place. Geneon Ent. supported the release with a major marketing campaign, including and breaking out of the traditional anime mediums. American audiences are hungry for complex adult animation and APPLESEEDs record pace is an indication of the broadening appeal of the anime genre, said Yosuke Kobayashi, president/ceo, Geneon Ent.
From Masamune Shirow, the creator of THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, APPLESEED opened in a limited theatrical run earlier this year. The sci-fi anime action-adventure features 3D Live Anime, a new animation style blending motion-capture technology and 3D computer animation, enhanced by the latest in 2D character animation.
