Apocalypto Conquers Penguins for Weekend Box Office

Mayans trumped penguins as Mel Gibson's epic movie, APOCALYPTO, from Buena Vista, debuted in first place (with vfx from Radium, Asylum, LOOK! Effects, Svengali FX), taking in $15M for the period ended Dec. 10, 2006. Warner Bros.' HAPPY FEET (the first 3D-animated feature from Animal Logic) shuffled back to the No. 2 position with $12.9M and a month-long take of $137.9M. Debuting in third place was Sony's THE HOLIDAY (vfx by Furious FX & Snow Business Int.) with $12.8M. Sony's CASINO ROYALE, with vfx by Peerless Camera, grabbed $8.9M for fourth place, bringing its cume to $150M.

Warner Bros. BLOOD DIAMOND debuted in fifth place (vfx by 11:11 Mediaworks, Flash Film Works, LOOK! Effects, Pixel Magic, Rising Sun Pictures), capturing $8.6M while Buena Vista's DÉJÀ VU (with vfx from Asylum Visual Effects), dropped to sixth, taking in $6M for a cume of $53M. Debuting in seventh place was Warner Bros.' UNACCOMPANIED MINORS (vfx by LOOK! Effects & Digital Dream) with a take of $5.8M.
