Puppet Animator Kihachiro Kawamoto Dies

Kihachiro Kawamoto, famed Japanese puppet animator, has died of pneumonia, reports Anime News Network. He was 85 years old.

The filmmaker is best known for his '80s TV series SANGOKUSHI, which was based on the Chinese novel ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS. His most popular experimental films include SHIJIN NO SHOUGAI and WINTER DAYS.

He was born in 1925 in Tokyo. In 1946, he launched his career in the art department at TOHO studio. He studied puppet animation under the guidance of Czech master Jiri Trnka.

For many years, he was the chairperson of the Japan Animation Association.
