Animated 'Cardboard' Feature in the Works

Fox Animation options the recently published “Cardboard” from graphic novelist Doug TenNapel for development under the WedgeWorks banner.

Fox Animation has optioned the recently published “Cardboard” from graphic novelist Doug TenNapel for development under the WedgeWorks banner, according to a report by Variety.

TenNapel's book follows an impoverished widower who gives a disappointing birthday present to his young son-- a cardboard box. Making the best out of a bad situation, they turn the box into a boxer named Bill that magically comes to life, attracting the attention of a neighborhood bully with evil plans.

Tobey Maguire’s production company Material Pictures will executive produce the project along with TenNapel and the Gotham Group.

WedgeWorks director Chris Wedge (Ice Age) will produce the film, but has not yet signed on to direct. Maguire, who voiced the lead in Warner Bros.’ Cats & Dogs, may have the option of voicing one of the main roles if the project moves forward.

Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios are now in post-production on Wedge's Epic, a 3D CG-animated action-adventure film due in May 2013.

Other TenNapel projects in development include Ghostopolis at Disney and Monster Zoo at Paramount.
