Animafest Zagreb Announces Family Cinema & Picnic

Animafest Zagreb World Festival of Animated Film set to occupy Zrinjevac with outdoor screenings of ‘Approved for Adoption’ and  ‘Azur & Asmar.’

Zagreb, Croatia -- The World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb this year decided to get out of the theatres and occupy Zrinjevac, where two feature screenings are scheduled to take place, next to a family picnic and workshops.

In addition to more than 300 films in competitions and side programmes, for all age categories, this year’s Animafest has prepared another novelty for its audience – family open-air screenings. Therefore, grab your blankets and picnic baskets on time and save the date for the most beautiful cinema in town, the open-air screening in Zrinjevac square!

Animafest’s first open-air programme takes place before the festival, on 30 May, and is planned to be a day-long socialising of all animation lovers and those yet to become ones. It all begins at 4pm with an art intervention by the Zagreb-based visual artist initiative Pimp My Pump, known for their illustrations on the old water pumps in Zagreb, and continues with art activities for children and reading the book that inspired this year’s festival theme – Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The programme’s peak will be an open-air screening of Animafest 2013 winner of both Grand Prix and Audience Award, Approved for Adoption by Laurent Boileau and Jung Henin. The evening closes with Alice in Vinyland party and the opening of Animafest’s corner, at the nearby club Vinyl, which will become the official get-together place during the festival.

‘Azur & Asmar’ Animafest is planning a similar programme for the festival period too, more accurately on 12 June, when Zrinjevac will host the visual fairy-tale treat by the winner of Lifetime Achievement Award, cult French animator Michel Ocelot – Azur and Asmar.

The rest of his magnificent oeuvre, just like the works of other great names of global and local animation, will be available 9-14 June at Zagreb’s Europa, Tuškanac and Cineplexx Centar Kaptol cinemas, and later via the independent cinema network across Croatia. A detailed festival schedule is available on the official website, and festival passes at early bird prices via Entrio.
