THE AMERICAN finished atop the U.S. box office for the Labor Day weekend. Focus Features' assassin-themed thriller (with vfx from Modus FX) earned $13.1 million over the weekend and $16.3 million since its Wednesday debut.

Robert Rodriguez's B-movie send-up MACHETE slashed its way into second with $11.4 million. Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios provided the vfx.

Screen Gems' TAKERS stole $10.9 million in third. The heist flick has earned $37.4 million.

Lionsgate's THE LAST EXORCISM scared up an additional $7.41 million. With vfx from Gradient Effects, the handheld horror flick has a cume of $32.2 million.

New Line's romantic comedy GOING THE DISTANCE landed in fifth with $6.9 million in its premiere weekend.

Lionsgate's THE EXPENDABLES took the sixth slot with $6.65 million. With vfx from Fantasy II Film Effects, the men on a mission picture has rounded up $92.2 million to date.

Sony's THE OTHER GUYS arrested $5.3 million in seventh, lifting its cume to $106.8 million.

Sony's EAT PRAY LOVE sank from fourth to eighth, bringing in another $4.8 million. The globetrotting romance has a cume of $68.9 million.

Warner Bros.' INCEPTION placed ninth with $4.55 million. With vfx from Double Negative, the hit sci-fi flick has collected $277.1 million.

Rounding out the top ten, NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS conjured up $3.51 million. Universal's family film has garnered $22.4 million thus far.
