The Art Institute of California - San Francisco announced it has remodeled its curriculum for interactive design in response to technology advancements and changing opportunities in the multimedia field. The school is now enrolling for its upcoming classes in the program starting January 10, 2005.
The new curriculum in "Interactive Media Design" will arm students with skills needed to enter the interactive graphics, digital marketing and Web development industries. The program is offered at both the Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science levels.
The school previously offered the program as Multimedia & Web Design, but the new curriculum features a variety of new or revised courses. More courses have been added on the design side, such as digital typography and design layout, based on input from employers in the interactive industry. The curriculum also takes a deeper look at various kinds of Websites through classes focusing solely on educational, entertainment and multi-user site development.
The changes are in response to advancements in technology and the increasing role designers play within the communications technology field. By learning a range of design and technology skills, students learn how to "architect" interactivity by weaving vector graphics, audio, photographic imagery, animation and video using scripting languages together. Students in the program also will learn about the structure of electronic games, information design, interactive authoring and animation for Websites. As a program outcome, students use their skills to make a digital portfolio to show employers.
The Associate of Science degree in Interactive Media Design is a seven-quarter program containing 112 quarter credit hours. Program courses cover image manipulation, color theory, Web page scripting, information design, video and audio for multimedia, 3D modeling, animation for multimedia, presentation authoring, database concepts and more.
The Bachelor of Science Degree is a 12-quarter program containing 192-quarter credit hours. The bachelor curriculum builds on earlier coursework and adds additional programming, scripting, networking, Web imaging and e-commerce competencies.
