ComingSoon.net reports that Hugo Weaving, best known as Agent Smith from THE MATRIX series, is in negotiations to play Red Skull in Marvel's THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. His WOLFMAN director Joe Johnston is helming the CAPTAIN AMERICA feature.

Names that have been floating around as the lead include John Krasinski (THE OFFICE), Patrick Fluger (THE 4400), Chace Crawford (GOSSIP GIRL), Wilson Bethel (GENERATION KILL), Mike Vogel (CLOVERFIELD), Chris Evans (FANTASTIC FOUR) and Garrett Hedlund (TRON LEGACY).

July 22, 2011 is set for the film's release.
