Tom Cruise has signed on to Joseph Kosinski's OBLIVION, reports Deadline.com. He will take the role of a soldier who gets trapped on the inhabitable Earth where he meets a woman that changes his view of what he has been told of his post apocalyptic world.

The Universal Pictures production is set to begin filming in October. William Monahan penned the script, which was reworked by Karl Gajdusek. It's based on Kosinski's Radical Publishing comic book.

The TRON: LEGACY director originally set up the project at Disney, but had to move to Universal when the Mouse House was uncomfortable with the material that doesn't match its family friendly mandate.
