Academy Wants Credits Early

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences wants its official screen credit forms now, before the Dec. 1, 2003 deadline.

"We're trying to encourage the studios and production companies to submit the forms as early as possible this year," said credits coordinator Torene Svitil. Forms must officially be submitted to the Academy no later than 60 days after the opening of the qualifying Los Angeles release, or Dec. 1, whichever comes first.

Because of the earlier date of the Awards next year (Feb. 29, 2004), the Academy needs to have the "Reminder List of Eligible Releases" proofed, printed and ready to mail with the nominations ballots on January 2. That's more than a week earlier than last year.

"We'll have very little time to make last minute changes to the list this year," Svitil said. "And if a film isn't in the List, it isn't eligible for Academy Awards consideration."

The deadline for receiving the entry form, synopsis, cast and credits list, filmographies, stills, proof of qualifying exhibition or award and film print for the short films categories is October 1.

The deadline for receiving the entry form, synopsis, cast and credits list, filmographies and stills for the animated feature category is November 3. The deadline for receiving the film print is November 20. If the animated feature is to be considered in other categories (such as Best Picture, Directing, etc.), it must also meet the appropriate deadlines and qualifications.

There are very different deadlines for the short film categories (both animated and live action) and the animated feature category. You can read all of the rules for all of the categories at the Academy Website at www.oscars.org/76academyawards/rules/index.html.
