Academy Announces Visual Effects Oscar Short List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the seven films being considered for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 78th Academy Awards.

The films in consideration are listed below in alphabetical order:

* BATMAN BEGINS (Double Negative, MPC, Rising Sun, Buf, Jim Hensons Creature Shop, The Senate and Cutting Edge)* CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (MPC, Framestore CFC, Digital Domain, Cinesite and Asylum)* THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE (Rhythm & Hues, Sony Pictures Imageworks and ILM)* HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (Double Negative, MPC, Framestore CFC, ILM, Animal Logic, Rising Sun, Cinesite, The Orphanage, Buf, Gentle Giant)* KING KONG (Weta Digital)* STAR WARS: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH (ILM* WAR OF THE WORLDS (ILM)

Conspicuously missing from the short list is SIN CITY, of course, but KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, FANTASTIC 4, ZATHURA and STEALTH also distinguished themselves.

Fifteen-minute clip reels from each of the seven films will be screened for the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee on Jan. 25. The members will then nominate three of these seven films for Oscar consideration. The finalists will be announced along with nominations in all other categories on Jan. 31, 2005, at 5:30 am PST, in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards of 2005 will be presented on March 5, 2006, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5:00 pm PST, beginning with a half-hour arrival segment.
