2003 DIY Book Festival Announces Winners

The 2003 DIY Book Festival has announced the winners of its annual contest honoring independent authors and publishers. The children's book I LOVE YOU MORE, written by Laura Duksta and illustrated by Karen Keesler, took home the grand prize of $1,000 as DIY Author of the Year and DIY Publisher of the Year.

I LOVE YOU MORE is a children's picture book that depicts a conversation about love between a mother and son. The flip-sided book that ends in the middle and begins from either side was created by two bartenders from Florida's South Beach, who started from scratch and created a company. The book has sold more than 100,000 copies as a self-published work and has spawned a host of multimedia accompaniments.

Winning in the Comics/'Zines category was JOTA, edited by Wanda Alarcon Zapata. The 'zine bills itself for artists, women, Chicanas, friends, amantes, intellectuals and jotas battling against the "rampant heterosexist commodity fetishism" of the world.

All winners will be honored on Oct. 2, 2003 in a gala celebration at the Derby nightclub in Hollywood, California. The evening awards ceremony will benefit the Beyond Baroque Literary Center of Venice, California. The event will feature spoken word performances, music, exhibits and literary readings by some of Beyond Baroque's alumni, all capped by the 2003 DIY Book Festival awards ceremony. Tickets for the event are $15 and available by calling the DIY Book Festival at (323) 665-8080 or may be purchased online at www.diyconvention.com. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the awards starting at 8:00 pm.

The 2003 DIY Book Festival is sponsored by Soft Skull Press, Final Draft Screenplay Software, Alcasid.com, the DIYReporter.com and JM Northern Media. For more information or for a complete list of winners visit www.diyconvention.com
