14 Finalists Announced in First International 3D Mobile Gaming Contest

Discreet and Mobile Game partners announced the 14 finalists in the first international 3D Mobile Game Gaming Contest.

Aimed at enabling independent mobile gaming artists or developers, traditional PC/Console Game developers and 3D freelancers to carry out their creative concepts for mobile games, the first 3D Mobile Gaming Contest received more than 100 3D Mobile Game project submissions, coming from 36 countries, including India, U.S., U.K., Germany, Russia, China, France, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Argentina, Australia and Canada.

Projects were submitted in a variety of categories based on file size, including Less than 200K/Java, Less than 200K/Native, 16MB and 1MB. With the support of the contest sponsors and Discreet, the 14 finalists will develop their submissions into working game prototypes that will be judged once again at the end of July, with the final winner announced at the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles, August 8-12, 2004.

The finalists were selected by a jury comprised of 17 international mobile gaming industry influencers: Stephane Vergnères (Game Portfolio manager, IN-FUSIO), Dimitry Granovsky (EMEA manager - University & Studio Relation, NVIDIA), Steffen Steafer (WW leader for Mobile Gaming, IBM), Dan Kealan (Worldwide Mobile Game manager, Orange), David Nahmani (Worldwide Developer program manager, Orange), Erwan Moysan (Mobile Game consultant), Vagué Ludinard (product manager, Kaolink), Jani Karlsson (senior manager - N-Gage Experience, Nokia), Marteen Noyons (Belle de Mai Media Park Game consultant), John Chasey (general manager, IOMO), Ville Vatén (project manager, Fathammer), Jon Jordan (DEVELOP and THE EDGE journalist, U.K.), Stuart O'Brien (Mobile Games analyst newsletter, journalist, U.K.), Matthias Lange (Creative Live chief editor, Germany), Bertrand Audouy (MOBILE BUSINESS magazine & MOBILE MAGAZINE journalist, France), and Carsten Kisslat (head of Game Design, Elkware).

"We selected the winning projects based on the quality of the graphics, production feasibility, mobility specifics and innovation," Karlsson said. "We found a general trend toward distinct segments in mobile gaming-downloadable Java and high-end Mobile games (16MB). We were very pleased with the large number of submissions considering that mobile devices are such a new medium for graphics-intensive games."

The competition provides a huge opportunity for talented mobile games developers and artists to showcase their skills, and we are pleased to contribute to their future success," says Martin Vann, vp, worldwide Sales and Marketing for Discreet.
