After 6 years, the organizers of the Oslo Animation Festival have moved operations to Fredrikstad. Even with a new name, the Nordic and Baltic Animation Festival Fredrikstad invites both animators and spectators to take part in five days of animated fun to promote the screening and better understanding of animation. The festival presents: Nordic and Baltic films in competition, Nordic and Baltic Panorama, International highlights, a Focus on Canadian animation, Paul Driessan as Guest of Honor, Animated Special Effects, a Celebration of Oskar Fischinger, Jury Progams, Exhibitions and even more. The UCLA Film and Television Archive will present The Old Man And The Sea at "Digital In Quebec," an evening showcasing 13 shorts from an exciting hub of digital artistry. New and recent shorts, including The Sound Of The Carceri, the Emmy-Award-winning short featuring Yo-Yo Ma playing Bach in computer-generated surroundings and the surreal Gecko, will show at 7:30 pm at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater. Atheromatosis and Malaria, both medical documentaries, show shimmering images of internal organs, and the Boxer displays a work using cutting-edge motion-capture technology. The evening will conclude with The Old Man And The Sea, the magnificent paint-on-glass film. Though the Oscar winner is not digitally produced, it adapts traditional animation techniques for the IMAX screen. Other works screening include La Presse, No Can Do, Life’s Circus, The Secret Adventures Of Jules Verne, Tony De Peltrie, Sweet Extreme and Nunayut. Tickets are available at the theater one hour before show time. General admission is US$6; tickets for students and seniors are $4. The 3D Conference and Expo provides four days of in-depth classes focused on the art and technology of 3D. It addresses the needs of professionals using 3D technology in a wide variety of contexts, including entertainment, architecture, engineering, science, medicine and legal affairs. More than 70 intermediate to advanced classes provide training and instruction in 3D tools and techniques used in animation, modeling, rendering, visual effects, industrial visualization, web design, broadcast and film design, and digital video. The Golden Sheaf Awards or the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival offer awards in various categories which include Children's Production, Documentary Over 30 Minutes, Documentary Under 30 Minutes, and Drama Under 60 minutes. Films must be 16mm, Betacam, Betacam SP NTSC or VHS NTSC. The entry fee for the competition is CA$100. All films entered had to have been completed between March 13, 1999 and February 10, 2000. The American Digital Arts Festival accepts entries in the following categories: Digital Filmmaking, Filmmaking with Digital Special Effects, Computer Animation, Digital Music, Digital Photography, Enhanced Scanned Photography, Digital Painting and Digital Graphics. Also, for youth age 17 & under, the festival presents The Digital Kids Fest as part of its program. Prizes are being furnished by Adobe, Deep Paint and MGI Software.
