An Evening with Stuart Little was presented by ASIFA-Hollywood and AFI. Henry Anderson and the Stuart Little/Sony Pictures Imageworks team presented a lively discussion of the performance aspects of the animation, plus some of the technical as well. This year, ASIFA-Hollywood hosted its 7th Annual Animation Expo. The Expo was a two day animation industry trade show focusing on the exhibition of animation related products and services and the recruitment of related talent and personnel. In addition, the Expo offered industry seminars and workshops, digital tutorials and a showcase of animation. The School of Visual Arts featured a workshop entitled "Art of Directing 3D Computer Animation" taught by Isaac Victor Kerlow, director of digital talent at Walt Disney. The SVA alumni led the one-day event explaining the day-to-day processes of art directing 3D computer animation productions. In addition, Kerlow discussed the various markets for 3D computer animation such as TV, interactive and the Web. The class was held from 9 am to 5 pm at a cost of US$160, plus a $20 registration fee. As the biggest short film event in Northern Europe, the Tampere International Short Film Festival featured 80 screenings, a film market and seminars. 16mm and 35mm films under 30 minutes, completed after January 1, 1998, were accepted for competition. Awards available included Grand Prize, Special Prize of the Jury, Best Animation and an Audience Award. In 1999, event attracted 24,000 viewers and the film market presented over 2,000 films from 60 countries. Cartoon, the European producers organization, presented a seminar on "how to negotiate with the U.S.A., Canada, Australia and Japan." Discussions focused on the structures, customs and constraints of the fore mentioned markets. After an introduction on each country, the various policies on international co-productions was discussed. A question and answer session was moderated by Francois Lesterlin and included a panel made up of Energee Entertainment's Geneviere Dexter; Xilam's Marc du Pontavice; Dargaud-Marina's Julie Fox; Nelvana's Emmanuele Petry; Skryptonite's Doug Zwick; and Les Films de la Perrine's Dominique Boischot. The 3rd Annual British Animation Awards included the following categories: Best Film Under Seven Minutes, Best Longer Short Film, Best TV and Film Graphics, Best Film at the Cutting Edge, Mari Kuttna Award for Best Directorial Debut, Best Direction of an Animated Commercial, Best Animation/Craft in a Commercial, Best Adult Series, Best TV Children's Special, Best Children's Series, Best Pre-School Series, Children's Choice Award, Best Scenario, Craft Award, and Public Choice Awards for Favourite Film, Favourite Commercial, and Favourite Film at the Cutting Edge. The three Public Choice awards are judged by members of the public at screenings in Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Nottingham, Cambridge, Cardiff and London during February 2000. All the winning films will go on a national tour in April 2000, soon followed by an international tour in Belgium.
