Taos Talking Picture Festival organizers program over 150 new independent films and videos, including features, documentaries, videos and shorts during the four-day festival, creating a multi-cultural rendezvous of film and video artists. A comprehensive Media Forum offers attendees panel discussions, workshops and demonstrations focusing on the state of media. Of special interest is the Georges MÈliËs Award, a production package of film, lab services and equipment rentals to be awarded to the director who demonstrates the most creative and powerful use of the short film/video form. Entries should have been completed within 18 months of the fest. Films should be submitted on VHS PAL or NTSC video. The 4th Cartoons On The Bay International Festival of Television Animation is the only festival in world dedicated to television animation. Promoted by Rai Radiotelevisione Italiana and conceived and organized by Rai Trade, the festival is an international event with awards, workshops, lectures and events centering on the ever-changing world of television animation. The International TV Cartoons Competition (Pulcinella Awards) and the International Conference of Television Animation are two of the many events held during the festival. The various Pulcinella Awards presented include best character of the year, programme of the year, and many other categories involving animated series and movies. Presented by triple Oscar winner Richard Williams, the Animation Masterclass is for professionals in the field, including classical animators, computer animators, assistant directors, producers, layout artists and instructors. The 2nd Annual New York Lower East Side Film Festival is a new, grass roots, competitive event showcasing independent films with no distribution deal but plenty of originality and entertainment value. On the leading edge of digital/video technology, movies will be screened in unconventional, unexpected Lower East Side restaurants, bars and assorted nooks. Categories include: Animation, Shorts, Features, and Documentaries. Entry fees are: $15 for films under 45 min., and $25 for films over 45 min. ASIFA-Central is having its Eighth Annual Animators Conference and Retreat. Anyone interested in animation can attend. While taking in the wonders of nature, animators can show their reel to other animators. The event will feature a variety of activities organized for the weekend from presentations by individual animators to talks about animators and demonstrations of animation styles and techniques.
