Cartoon Noir comes to LA. This multi-technique film is a feature-length compilation of animated shorts from American and European artists. Featured in Cartoon Noir are: APE, Julie Zammarchi's darkly comic critique of monogamy, meat eating and the daily pattern of human brutality; Altair, Lewis Klahr's collagist elegy on New York nightlife; Club Of The Discarded, Jiri Barta's tale of a family of discarded mannequins who enjoy a quiet life in an abandoned warehouse until a group of hipster mannequins move in and spoil the neighborhood; Gentle Spirit, Piotr Dumala's Dostoyevsky-inspired story of the psychological landscape between a young lady and an ominous male figure; Joy Street, Suzan Pitt's story of a woman who journeys from suicidal despair to personal renewal with the help of an unlikely spirit guide; and The Story Of The Cat And The Moon, Pedro Serrazina's mini-classic of the fatalistically unrequited love as a cat ceaselessly seeks the moon. Each year the Brussels Cartoon and Animated Film Festival programs the "crème de la crème" in international animation. It is one of the top festivals on the international cartoon and computer generated images circuit. It features 150 to 200 films, plus premieres, original retrospectives, exhibitions, "making of" programs and invites a host of top-ranking guests. All of which makes Brussels the only place to be, as 35,000 spectators discovered at the previous edition of the Festival. This year, ASIFA-Hollywood will host its 7th Annual Animation Expo. The Expo is a two day animation industry trade show focusing on the exhibition of animation related products and services and the recruitment of related talent and personnel. In addition, the Expo offers industry seminars and workshops, digital tutorials and a showcase of animation. Admission price for a one day floor pass is US$10 for the general public and free to ASIFA-Hollywood members. An Expo pass, which includes a 2-day floor pass and admission to up to three Saturday seminars, is $50 for the general public and $25 for ASIFA-Hollywood members. A VIP pass, which includes a 2-day floor pass and admission, pre-registration, priority seating at three Saturday seminars and a one-year ASIFA-Hollywood membership, is $100 for the general public and $75 for ASIFA-Hollywood Members. The School of Visual Arts will feature a workshop entitled "Art of Directing 3D Computer Animation" taught by Isaac Victor Kerlow, director of digital talent at Walt Disney. The SVA alumni will lead the one-day event explaining the day-to-day processes of art directing 3D computer animation productions. In addition, Kerlow will discuss the various markets for 3D computer animation such as TV, interactive and the Web. The class will be held from 9 am to 5 pm at a cost of US$160, plus a $20 registration fee. The deadline for registration is February 17, 2000. As the biggest short film event in Northern Europe, the Tampere International Short Film Festival features 80 screenings, a film market and seminars. 16mm and 35mm films under 30 minutes, completed after January 1, 1998, are accepted for competition. Awards available include Grand Prize, Special Prize of the Jury, Best Animation, and an Audience Award. Last year's event attracted 24,000 viewers and the film market presented over 2,000 films from 60 countries. The 3rd annual British Animation Awards will include the following: Best Film Under Seven Minutes, Best Longer Short Film, Best TV and Film Graphics, Best Film at the Cutting Edge, Mari Kuttna Award for Best Directorial Debut, Best Direction of an Animated Commercial, Best Animation/Craft in a Commercial, Best Adult Series, Best TV Children's Special, Best Children's Series, Best Pre-School Series, Children's Choice Award, Best Scenario, Craft Award, and Public Choice Awards for Favourite Film, Favourite Commercial, and Favourite Film at the Cutting Edge. The three Public Choice awards are judged by members of the public at screenings in Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Nottingham, Cambridge, Cardiff and London during February 2000. All the winning films will go on a national tour in April 2000, soon followed by an international tour in Belgium. The Santa Clarita International Film Festival is strictly dedicated to family entertainment. It includes a film and screenplay competition, student filmmaker award, as well as panel discussions. Acting Instructor Ed Hooks will teach an Acting for Animators workshop at his studio. This class is the first such class Hooks has taught in San Francisco since last September and will feature topics such as character analysis, essential acting principles for animators, importance of empathy and how to achieve it in your work, power centers and Laban Movement Analysis. Hooks has conducted workshops on-site for animation companies like Will Vinton Studios and OddWorld Inhabitants. The workshop will be held from 10 am - 5 pm at a cost of US$125. The 10th International Trickfilm Festival will present the best animated productions from the past two years. More than 500 films will be screened at the festival. The Best of Animation includes a selection of the most interesting films in the history of artistic, animated film. Young Animation is a competition featuring animated film schools and colleges. The festival will also present the International Panorama, Tricks for Kids, a retrospective of William Kentridge's work, as well as workshops and exhibitions. The Third Brisbane International Animation Festival represents Australia in an international animation festival alliance with Ottawa, Holland, Fantoche and Anima Mundi. Iowa State University's student television station is looking for animated films of any kind under 7 minutes in length, for their animation exposition. The winner will be broadcast locally in April of 2000 to an audience of around 40-50,000 homes. In addition, animators that participate will have their Web sites linked to from the station Web site. Submissions can be on BetaSP, SVHS or VHS tapes. Since the animations will be broadcast on TV, all submissions must meet FCC rules that include no nudity, graphic violence or language. The deadline for entries is March 1, 2000 and there is no entry fee.
