Williams on the aesthetics of computer games, Marilyn Carney on Australian women animators, Bryan Barker on the impact of CinemaScope on animation production, Cathyrn Vasseleu on "Time Stratum II" an art installation by Japanese multimedia artist, Toshio Iwai, and others. This year, SIGGRAPH '99, the International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, was held in downtown Los Angeles at the L.A. Convention Center. The conference program included papers, panels, courses, sketches, and applications. The event also included an animation festival; art gallery: technOasis; Emerging Technologies: The Millennium Motel; Creative Applications Lab: The Digital Cafe; and The Studio showcasing the latest implementations of technology. The Electronic Schoolhouse focused on computer graphics and interactive technology education. AWN was featured there. Among the events at this year's Comic-Con International, the country's largest comic book convention, were a celebration of the Animation Renaissance which included previews of upcoming animation from MTV Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and more, as well as discussions with the creators who are shaping the future of animation. Among the scheduled guests were voice actress June Foray (Rocky And Bullwinkle) and Batman Beyond series producer, Paul Dini. Chris Prynoski, creator of the new series MTV Downtown, hosted a panel discussion with three of the show's writers, and presented an episode from the series. Neil Gaiman spoke about writing the dialogue for the English version of Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. For more information visit www.comic-con.org.

Dr. William Moritz, noted authority on experimental animation and visual music, introduced a selection of 16mm and 35mm films from The iotaCenter's collection of experimental and abstract films. The program included: a hand-painted film record from 1903 of a dance by visual music artist, Loïe Fuller, the darling of Paris' Folies Bergère, a film record of Charles Dockum performing live on the visual music instrument he invented in 1939, the Dockum Mobilcolor Projector, High Voltage by James Whitney and Allures by Jordan Belson, a rare presentation in 35mm of Oskar Fischinger's tour de force from 1937, Optical Poem, In The Night by Walther Ruttman, Furies by Sara Petty, Film #11 by Harry Smith, Come Closer by Hy Hirsh, Free Radicals by Len Lye, Celery Stalks At Midnight by John Whitney, Sr., Stars And Stripes by Norman McLaren, Silence by Jules Engel, 3/78 by Larry Cuba, Beethoven Machinery by David Brody, Impressions In The Upper Atmosphere by José Antonio Sistiaga, Algorithm by Bärbel Neubauer, Bubbles by Karel Dodal, and Study # 6 by Oskar Fischinger. An Evening with the Professionals: TV Animation, took place at Walt Disney TV Animation Studio, Frank Wells Building. The speakers included Cindy Marcus who (with her husband Flip Kobler) wrote Pocahontas II: Journey To A New World and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. The US premiere of Perfect Blue, a 1997 Japanese film directed by Satoshi Kon took place at the Cinema Village theater. Perfect Blue is the story of a soap opera actress who finds it difficult to distinguish between her TV persona and real life. The film won the public prize for best Asian film at Montreal's Fant-Asia festival. The trailer can be viewed online at www.sputnik7.com.
