ANIMATION WORLD MAGAZINE - ISSUE 4.6 - SEPTEMBER 1999

Hey! What About Macs?
Mike Amron's article "Creating Computer Animation at Home" (Amron, 4.5) was interesting, but I felt that he simply glossed over the MacIntosh platforms. In my opinion, he almost came across as an Intel vendor. Perhaps it was a case of writing about what you know, but I feel that he could have spent a little more time researching and writing a few specs on the Apple machines. "The new Apple computers are fairly quick as well," comes across as really limp.

Thank you,
Glenn H. Travis

Workers Rights
I would like to ask you, the editor of Animation World Magazine as someone who can hopefully disseminate information on the web, to help us, the animation community, with legal information pertaining to workers rights and contract labor. I have searched news groups and web pages and I have been gathering as much information as I can, but I am finding it a very difficult process.

I have many friends, including myself, who straight out of college jumped into sweatshop situations and poor working environments with no regard for self preservation, economics or dignity in order to land that all important first job. These situations are comparable to Honduran garment shops when one considers the education and talent of some of the animators. There are also legal issues ranging from Self Employment taxes to contract labor law definitions that need to be defined in order to help aspiring future animators. It is unfortunate but the union protection and water fountain information pools outside of California is slim to nothing.

I would greatly appreciate any information you can either post, or pass on to me such that I may start a web site of the same material. It is my hopes however to centralize this information, and I feel that your site more than any other deserves to be the focal point for this kind of information.

Thank you.

Editor's Note: This is a very good idea. Thank you for the suggestion. We are always seeking feedback so that we can best meet the needs of our readers. Look for an article on this topic in an upcoming issue of Animation World soon.
