Filling Up The Bookshelves. A variety of animation books have recently been published. Timothy and Kevin Burke's Saturday Morning Fever: Growing Up With Cartoon Culture (St. Martin's Press/$17.95) takes a nostalgic and irreverent look at Saturday morning TV between 1965 and 1980. From Hong Kong Phooey to H.R. Pufnstuf, the book tackles important issues like the sexual preferences of Dr. Quest and Race Bannon and the influence of The Archies on other cartoon shows. Kit Laybourne's thoroughly updated The Animation Book (Three Rivers Press/$24.95) is an all-in-one comprehensive guide to the art and science of animation. The new edition includes extensive information on the latest computer-generated animation techniques from digital ink and paint to computer sound editing. The book's step-by-step case-study approach explains how animation studios like Wild Brain, Protozoa, Fantôme, Nicktoons and Klasky-Csupo completed specific projects. Last, but certainly not least, is Michael Barrier's long-awaited Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation In The Golden Age (Oxford University Press/$39.95). The 624-page tome is an indepth account of the golden age of animation from the '30s through the '50s chronicling the creation of classic characters like Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny. Michael Barrier was the former publisher of the highly regarded animation publication Funnyworld.

All of these books will be reviewed in upcoming issues of Animation World Magazine.
