Animation World News:Events

Tunes For Toons. San Francisco animation fans are enjoying a new form of frame-by-frame entertainment. "Ideas in Animation" is a monthly event in which animated films are screened to the accompaniment of live music. "It's 80% rehearsed, and the rest is improvisation," said Nick Phelps, a musician and composer who conceived, curates and scores the programs. Animators are encouraged to send in films and even works-in-progress to be considered for inclusion in the programs (honorarium paid for commercial screenings). While the events are based at San Francisco's Minna Street theater for now, Phelps hopes to take the show on the road next year. The "Ideas in Animation" schedule for the rest of 1997 is November 6, November 24 and December 7. For information/reservations, call (415) 681 3189. Film submissions may be sent (with SASE) to: 2066 30th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94116-1148.

MIFED Launches MIFED Cartoons. The 64th International MIFED film market took place October 19-24, 1997 in Italy. For the first time, MIFED offered a new initiative called MIFED CARTOONS, aimed to "foster and support the marketing of animated features for both theatrical and home video purposes." MIFED CARTOONS will include a daily schedule of screenings, a business center with an Internet-connected computer linked to related web sites, and an on-site "video library," where buyers can view video cassettes and access a data bank of available films and rights information. In addition, Mediatech and IBTS will present a seminar on the subject of new technologies being used in animated feature production.
