 Digital Smoke
by John Anderson, University of Wisconsin at Madison.

"The problem with physical simulation pieces," John told AWN, "is that you work 3 months on something and its only 20 seconds long." Where there's smoke, there's fire. John and his team at U of Wisconsin's Computerized Sciences Scientific Visualization department are currently working on an algorithm to simulate fire.

 Conscience
by Emre Yilmaz, with Dan Hanna and Bay Raitt, Protozoa,
San Francisco.

Conscience is described as being "an exploration of the deep agony of being confronted by the Lacanian 'other,' and the subconscious transduction of interpersonal identity that ensues." Really, though, it's just a silly little piece about a monkey who wants to step on a spider, but is stopped by his conscience.
Note: see Protozoa's VRML skit, Floops, in the
SIGGRAPH News Report.

 Good Vibrations
by Harald Evers, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany.
Contributors: Harald Evers, Gerald Glombitza, Oliver Werner, Hans-Peter Meinzer.

For this scientific visualization, two tomographic image volumes, a magnetic resonance time-sequence of a human heart and a CT-scan of a skull were manipulated and rendered to achieve a voxel-based vibration effect. The volume data was visualized using the Heidelberg Raytracing Model, a method that models the interaction of light with objects in volume data.
