Distant Corners Gains Creature Feature Rights

Sci-fi/horror entertainment Website Distant Corners has signed a deal to manage the online and licensing rights for the CREATURE FEATURES franchise. FEATURES is an upcoming HBO and Cinemax series, which will modernize versions of Samuel Z. Arkoff's 1950s classic monster movies. The first two films in the series will be THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED and WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST. The series is being produced by Lou Arkoff, Colleen Camp and Stan Winston, whose Stan Winston Studios will handle the visual effects.

Spielberg & Howard Webtoons Debut On Monday, February 5

CountingDown.com will roll out two animated shorts by directors Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard on Monday, February 5, 2001. Each of the two DREAM shorts will feature a personal introduction by the acclaimed directors and a shot by shot explanation of their own animated dream. PDI DreamWorks was hired to animate the shorts in Flash. The DREAMS will kick-off CountingDown.com's Theater, which will feature over 100 short films made by amateur filmmakers and USC film students, as well as parodies and spoofs.

Australian Government Sets Out To Ban Political Web Game

Government officials in Australia are threatening a lawsuit against WebWank.net for posting a political satire Web game, which pokes fun at the country's treatment of its aboriginal people. Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Herron feels that the use of his likeness in the game, JOHN HERRON'S STOLEN CHILDREN GAME, is a defamation of character. In the game, players must capture all ten of John Herron's children then place them in non-white families.

Rumpus Gains Big Voices For Next Online Feature

Rumpus.com has done it again gaining top Hollywood talent for its online animated features. Frankie Muniz, the star of Fox's live-action comedy MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, will voice the character of Rocky in Rumpus' new THE RED BISON. Also featured in the new film will be Josh Charles (SPORTS NIGHT), Michael Black (ED), and Alexander Chaplin (SPIN CITY).

DreamWorks Signs 5 Year Gaming Pact With TDK

DreamWorks has signed a five-year production deal with Calabasas, California-based TDK Mediactive to produce games for current and next-generation gaming consoles. The first project for TDK will be the gaming adaptation of PDI/DreamWorks' 3D animated feature SHREK. Already DreamWorks has signed a deal to have a Nintendo Game Boy version arrive on shelves in conjunction with the release of the film in May. TDK also produces games for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Universal, Harvey and New Line.

Electronic Arts To Support Microsoft Xbox Console

Microsoft Corp. and Electronic Arts (EA) announced that EA will provide its games for the Xbox video game system, Microsoft's highly anticipated, next-generation video game console. Initial titles will be MADDEN NFL FOOTBALL, NASCAR 2000, FIFA and F1 2000. Under the terms of the multiyear pact, EA will publish up to 10 titles in support of the console's launch in fall 2001. In addition, EA has ordered 500 Xbox Development Kits (XDKs) from Microsoft.

iFilm Trims Staff By 15

Destination site iFilm has cut its roster by 15 employees, about 10% of its staff. "We have recently completed three major development initiatives: the rollout of the iFilm portal, the relaunch of iFilmpro and the introduction of our online testing business," said Melissa Zukerman, the company's VP of corporate communications.

Macromedia, Inc. has launched Macromedia Exchange for Flash, a Web destination dedicated to Flash developers. exchange.macromedia.com allows Flash users to share Flash 5 extensions such as Smart Clips, ActionScript samples, Macromedia Generator templates and source files. Free extensions on the Exchange range from ready-made interactivity building blocks to sophisticated server-side technologies.

TheThreshold.Com Possesses Hellraiser Gaming Rights

Santa Monica Internet entertainment site TheThreshold.com has acquired the online game rights to the HELLRAISER franchise originally created by Clive Barker. HELLRAISER: HELL ONLINE will be the first game produced from the deal and will be available at www.thethreshold.com or directly through www.hellraiseronline.com. The game challenges players to solve the Lament Configuration, the puzzle box that opens a gateway to Hell. The game starts as a simple puzzle that gamers must solve each time they visit the Website. CountingDown.com To Debut Spielberg, Howard Toons

Despite DreamWorks and Imagine Entertainment's downfall with Pop.com, Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard plan to create Webtoons for CoutingDown.com, the movie-fan site purchased by DreamWorks to be part of Pop.com. Howard's toon will be based on a recurring nightmare he has been having, where he is trapped on a crazed and out-of-control film set. Spielberg's toon will also be based on one of the filmmaker's dreams, but no plot has been released. The site will debut one toon early in December and the other in January.

Dotcomix In Negotiations With Buyer

Despite a report in the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER that the company is bankrupt, Internet animation producer and distributor Dotcomix is in discussions to be bought. AWN spoke with founder and chief creative officer Brad DeGraf and he said the company "just couldn't keep producing as it had in the past." DeGraf said the production staff has been laid off until the transition period is finished. However, president and CEO Damon Danielson has left the company to become the CEO of Video4I, a multi-platform video streaming company.

EA Announces Third Installment Of Ultima Online

Electronic Arts and its Austin, Texas subsidiary, ORIGIN Systems have announced they will release ULTIMA ONLINE: THIRD DAWN early next year. THIRD DAWN is the third upgrade to the popular game that currently boosts more than 200,000 active subscribers. The new version will have enhanced gesturing and motion-captured 3D animations. In addition, THIRD DAWN will include an enhanced lighting and shading system, one new environment, over a dozen new monsters and improved music and sound effects.

Convergence Backwards: TV's Kung Fu Hits Net

In convergence gone backwards, a TV property is moving to the Internet. On November 15, 2000, Time Warner-owned Entertaindom launched the 3D animated Webseries KUNG FU 3D, based on the classic TV series, KUNG FU, starring David Carradine. The series features Carradine voicing his character Kwai Chang Caine. Throughout this new Web serial, 30-year-old Caine lives by and upholds the spiritual beliefs that have driven him to condemn violence and force.
