Legendary in Epic Negotiations

Film financier Legendary Pictures is in discussions to acquire Epic Games, the developer of GEARS OF WAR, among others, per VARIETY.

Execs at both companies declined late last week to comment to VARIETY.

If the deal goes through, it would make Legendary the first film financing company to invest directly in videogames. Studios like Warner Bros. (where Legendary is based) have recently started putting their own money into games.

HS Musical 3 Dances Way To Box Office Win

Disney's HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR, transferring from cable TV to the big screen, debuted with $42.03M and a box office win. Per VARIETY, it's the biggest box office opening for any musical in history. The film also saw $40M in 22 overseas markets, making it the first worldwide No. 1 opener since THE DARK KNIGHT.

Second place went to horror flick SAW V with $30.05M for Lionsgate (vfx by Switch VFX). The now-yearly Halloween staple is now around $2M away from stealing FRIDAY THE 13TH's title as highest-grossing horror franchise in history, per VARIETY.

Aardman Animations has joined forces with YouTube to launch another Aardman branded channel, Aardman's Darkside. The channel will offer a selection of some of the company's more surreal comedies and shorts including REX THE RUNT, THE ADVENTURES OF JEFFREY, A TOWN CALLED PANIC and ANGRY KID.

First Six Minutes Of Tinker Bell On Disney Online

Disney Online is celebrating the release of Walt Disney Pictures' all-new movie, TINKER BELL on Blu-ray Hi-Def and Disney DVD, by previewing the first six minutes of the film exclusively at Disney.com (www.disney.com/tinkerbell) on October 27 and 28.

The preview will be available to view on Disney.com's newly launched full-screen video player. Additionally, Disney Online's latest virtual world, Disney Fairies PIXIE HOLLOW (www.PixieHollow.com) is marking TINKER BELL's arrival with a special in-game event.

Universal Gets EA's Army of Two

Electronic Arts has closed a deal with Universal Pictures to bring EA's new franchise and top-selling videogame, ARMY OF TWO, to the big screen.

Scott Stuber, through his Stuber Productions shingle, will produce the film along with EA, and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, who recently co-wrote the blockbuster THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, has signed on to adapt the game for the screen. Universal Pictures, Stuber Productions and EA are planning to begin production of the film in 2009.

PopCap's Website to go Radio Silent in Advance of Bejeweled Twist Launch

Casual game developer and publisher PopCap Games will be shuttering its website for six hours prior to the formal unveiling and official launch of BEJEWELED TWIST on Monday, October 27, at a gala celebration in downtown Seattle. The site will reopen at approximately 7 p.m. PDT that evening after going offline six to seven hours earlier -- during which time the site will undergo a revolutionary makeover to celebrate the arrival of PopCap's biggest game to date.

Filmakademie Provides Facial Animation To Quantum Game

Videogame publisher Activision Blizzard builds on facial animation technology created at Filmakademie's R&D Lab to raise the bar for in-game characters in the upcoming James Bond videogame QUANTUM OF SOLACE.

"Using the tools allowed us to enhance our production pipelines and shorten times for creating believable character animation," said Filippo Costanzo, Head of Research and Development. The technology was developed within the research project "Artificial Actors" at the Filmakademie's Institute of Animation.

Spore Patch Now Available

The SPORE universe continues to evolve with a new patch available now for download. In response to SPORE players' and community members' feedback, this patch fixes reported bugs, tunes gameplay, offers an added way of selecting multiple items to delete/ban in Sporepedia and introduces a cool new cube planet style.
