The NPD Group also reported retail sales of U.S. console and portable videogames hardware, software and accessories saw an increase of 21% during the first half of 2005 (January June), compared to the same time period last year. The videogames industry saw sales figures rise to more than $4.1 billion in the first half of the year compared to $3.4 billion in the first half of 2004.

Konami Digital Ent. Inc. announced a multi-year agreement with FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide, Americas that gives the company the exclusive interactive videogame rights for AMERICAN IDOL. Pursuant to the agreement, FLW, Americas grants Konami the rights to develop games for current and next generation videogame systems. The games will be distributed throughout America, Canada and Latin America with more details to be revealed at a later date.
Capcom announced that renowned film title designer Kyle Cooper has created the opening sequence for their upcoming videogame, DARKWATCH. The flagship title from development house High Moon Studios Inc., DARKWATCH is an immersive first person shooter (FPS) for the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox, that blends the Western and vampire-horror genres. Darkwatch will be released on Aug. 16, 2005.
Electronic Arts announced that it has been granted the rights to develop games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic literary fiction, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Since 2001, EA has developed games based exclusively on New Line's Academy Award winning theatrical productions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, as depicted by Peter Jackson. The expansion of the rights allows EA to introduce players to depths of the fiction never before explored in an EA game.
Atari Inc. and Marc Ecko announced an star-studded lineup of Hollywood talent providing voices for the characters featured in the videogame, MARC ECKO'S GETTING UP: CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE. Sean "P. Station Exchange is going live for EVERQUEST II on two all-new servers (The Bazaar and Shadowhaven). EQII players will be given the option to have their characters moved for free over to the new servers or they can start up brand-new characters there. Entertainment Rights (ER) has signed a deal to make HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE the first-ever classic animated series to be released in Universal Media Disc (UMD) format in the U.S. This follows ERs agreement with U.S. HE-MAN DVD partner, BCI Eclipse (a Navarre Corp. Co.) for the U.S. PlayStation Portable (PSP) rights to HE-MAN. The first two HE-MAN titles will be released on UMD video in August 2005.

Nickelodeon will offer full length series via the Internet for the first time as it launches TurboNick, a broadband video platform available on Nick.com. TurboNick will feature up to 20 hours of new programming every week and includes advertising. In its soft launch phase that commenced July 1, 2005, TurboNick has garnering more than 1.25 million streams and will officially launch with a full advertising and promotional campaign on July 17.
