Charlie's Christmas, a medium-length film by Girerd, which provisionally brings to an end this retrospective, was to be particularly groomed by the studios and co-producers, as if, for Girerd and his team, the time had come to demonstrate in the up-market range that they have chosen to work in the proficiency, the know how and the skills that they are now capable of. Was this to be seen as the foreshadowing of a future full length film?

For this 26¹ TV film, more or less the same team was used for My dear little Planet. Benoît Chieux and Damien LouchePélissier were again heading the graphics, while being at the same time co-scriptwriters, and one could honestly say that this time, they really let themselves go developing ideas that had been only outlined in My dear little Planet. Iouri Tcherenkov and Antoine Lanciaux looked after the storyboard while Michaël Dudok De Wit, Alain Gagnol, Sylvain Vincendeau, Jean-Charles Mouveau, Sylvie Léonard, Bela Weisz, Zoïa Trophinova and Marc Robinet found themselves working on the animation. Serge Besset was, as usual, commended the soundtrack, employing a symphonic orchestra which, alongside the participation of L'Orchestre Lyrique de la Région Avignon Provence gave an exceptional scope to the film.

This non-denominational Christmas story tells the tale of a Father Christmas in full crisis we shall see why at the end of the film and a colorful character, the spindly postman, (reminding us of Jacques Tati). In fact, without at all weighing down the film, allusions are abundant, including in the set, as well as a brief pastiche of Van Gogh. (Folimage has always loved tipping its hat to the fine arts!) The film pays tribute to the graphics of the 1960s, before psychedelics came along, smoothing down the edges.

The film also tinkled with awards: Best Children's Film at Stuttgart in 1998, Prix Spécial TV in Annecy 1998, Cartoon d'Or 1998, Pucinella d'Or at Naples, Ponzan Goats Award in Poland, and Grand Prix at Marl in Germany...

Upon hearing the news that "Charlie's Christmas" won the Cartoon d'Or 1998, Animation World Magazine asked director Jacques-Rémy Girerd to share his thoughts. Includes a Quicktime movie.
