Hulu Presents Summer Film School

Hulu has start a series that will talk about what it takes to make a great film. If you are interested you should go to Hulu and check it out.

This is week 1 and it is about this.

Week 1: Story Structure and Screenwriting
All great movies start with a great story. This week we're exploring the building blocks behind what makes a great story through a selection of films which either exemplify the classic Hollywood structure or remix it in an innovative way. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learn more about our selections, read about the role of the Three-Act Structure in “Ghostbusters,” Learn how you can apply these principles to your own works!

Week 2: Cinematography

Part master technician, part creative visionary, the cinematographer is the chief constructor of the film’s visual style. This week we're exploring the cinematographer’s ability to not only influence what we see, but how we see it. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learn about our favorite scenes from each of this week's films, read about the different types of camera shots in Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and view our content from last week’s lesson on Screenwriting.

Week 3: Color Theory and Lighting

Through their use of light and color, a filmmaker can set the mood, bring the viewer into the film’s world, and weave an emotional through line into what the character is thinking and feeling. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learn about each of the featured films, read a guest post from the Criterion Collection about the use of light in “Persona,” and view our content from last week’s lesson on Cinematography.

Week 4: Soundtrack, Score,

Through tinkering with the sounds of the film, a composer, foley artist, or music supervisor can make the hairs on our neck stand up at the arrival of a villain or our hearts swell over a first kiss. When these auditory artists pair the right sound with the right scene, it’s a moment of pure movie magic. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learn about each of the featured films, read about the soundtrack in "A Hard Day’s Night," and view an archive of our previous lessons.

Week 5: Costumes & Set Design

As the architects of a film’s visual environment, the costume and set designers craft stunning visual experiences that are integral to the storytelling process. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to view costume and set pieces from each of our selections, read about the out-of-this-world attire in “Earth Girls are Easy,” and view an archive of our previous lessons.

Week 6: Animation

Animation is the art of breathing life into the inanimate. Through their work, these artists tell powerful stories, craft compelling characters, and invent fantastical worlds where the possibilities are truly endless. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learnbehind-the-scenes facts about each of our selections, explore the 12 Principles of Animation in “The Secret of Kells,” and view an archive of our previous lessons.

Week 7: Post-Production

The editors are the unsung heroes of the production. As the last shepherds of the film, they reorder, splice, and shape the raw footage to breathe mood, tension, and structure into the film. Under the guardianship of a great editor, no frame goes unexamined and no contribution—whether it be in acting or cinematography—goes underappreciated. Visit the Hulu Summer Film School blog to learn more about each of our selections , read about the decisions involved in the post-production process, and view an archive of our previous lessons.
