I want to get into 2D animation, but I've never animated before?

Hello, I am a grade 12 student, soon-to-be graduate, and I am taking a year off to improve my skills and earn some money for tuition. I am motivated and determined to become an animator, but my work is limited to what I have been taught in school and what I have done on my own time. This does not include any form of animation. I have a basic mental grasp of how everything works, such as inbetweening, anticipation, etc etc, but I have never put my pencil to cels and actually animated anything (other than a few flip books and a grade 9 flash assignment).

Basically my question is: Do animation schools expect you to know how to animate from day one, or do they work off of your skills in order to teach you how?

Thanks in advance.

I have never taken class, this century, I do feel safe in saying this. No, they all start everyone from the begaining.

What does your graduation cover and what skills are you planing to improve?
