Mastering Facial Expression

9:30am to 4:30pm each day
This workshop is taught by Gary Faigin, author of
The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression,
the best-selling book instrumental to the Gollum
animators on The Lord of the Rings films.
The unique workshop offers you the opportunity to
explore the subtle mechanics of the human face.
Using your own face as a model, Faigin leads you
through a methodical exploration of the muscles,
movements and expressions of the face—training
that is invaluable when transferring to animation.
Toward the end of the week, you work from a
model as you begin the transition from depicting
your own expressions to depicting the same
expressions on the faces of others.
Faigin also discusses cartoons, master paintings
and other artistic depictions of the face in action
to further your understanding of the basics of
emotions as expressed on the face.
