I use ToonBoom Studio and I usually copy some of the drawings from one frame to the next frame and then modify them a little bit so as to give the illusion of motion.(its not very practical to draw again from zero, even with onionskin on).
The problem arises when I modify the copied drawing- I find that the original instance has also been modified (all the extra touches are automatically transferred to it, too).
What can I do?

NOt too good with toonboom too, but I remember facing the same problem , you are to introudce a new keyframe and then copy the contents into that frame before any modifications . hope that works

here's what I do:
Select what you want to copy in the drawing view. Press "s" to go to the next frame without using the x-sheet. Press Ctrl-V to paste.
If you start messing around in the x-sheet, you are copying and pasting frames, not drawings.
