shooting at 30fps question

I'm working on timing a 2D animation that is required to be shot at 30fps. I've looked through a few animation books that say shoot on twos for a 24fps animation, but nothing is said about the number of shots at 30fps .

My question is, generally, is a 30fps animation shot on threes?

Hi gatchafan.

No, you don't animate on 3's @ 30fps. Essentially you would treat it just like any other animation... except, of course you are producing more drawings per second @ 30fps than you are with 24 of 25 fps.

The real question is... what kind of animation is it? If it is very broad and fast movement, then you may even have to animate on 1's to make it smooth and have it not strobe. If however the movement is limited and/or slow, with not too much going on, then 2's should perfectly suffice.

I had never animated on 3's in my life before... as 3's definitely give a staggering feel to the action. However, recently, I did use 3's on a extremely slow sequence in my film that used infinitely small movements from drawing to drawing (i.e. less than a pencil width)... in which case the use of 3's was unnoticeable and yet gave me increased slowness for the number of drawings I was using.

Hope this helps?

Yeah! Thanks for clearing that for me, Tony! Haha...shooting on threes would be stretching it!
Wow, drawings as less than a pencil length?!
I've tried doing close drawings with moving holds, but with unsatisfied results. Any advice on keeping it consistent or is it just practice til i'm able to see it?

Just wondering here... but, if you shoot on 3's @ 30fps you'll get 10 fps, which is 2 fps less than shooting on 2's @ 24 fps. So in the end it's not THAAATTTT different :)

By the way, why do you HAVE to animate @ 30 fps? can't you just animate the way you're used to, and then export the video to 30 fps using frame blending and motion blur?

As I said Daniel... if the movement is broad and fast across the width of the screen ... with big separations between drawing to drawing... animation on 3's (even at 30fps) will still be staccato and staggered. However, if the movement from drawing to drawing is insignificant... such as a pencil line width... then yes, its not that different. (s)

Thanks, Tony and Daniel for your help.
